Score Free Woolly | Threadless

Score Free Woolly | Threadless until Nov 19th, 2013: Sorry, It's Too Late to... Free Woolly. The weekend is here and I just wanted to do something a little twisted. Not sure why I picked this theme because ever since I was a child, I actually loved the Woolly Mammoth. I still get excited when I hear all that talk about cloning, especially when a perfectly preserved specimen has been discovered somewhere deep in the frozen tundra. Maybe it's not too late for this furry friend?!

RedBubble Monsters Challenge

His Bite is Much Worse Than Their Bark:

Looks like my nightmare design was selected as a finalist in the RB Monsters Challenge. The winner will be determined by popular vote. If you like my art, please vote for my design at http://redbubble-monsters.strutta.com/entry/3767539

Like most kids, this boy has experienced some of the most terrifying nightmares. Scary monsters climb out from closets and underneath beds on a mission to deprive children (and their parents) from a peaceful nights sleep.
Unlike most kids, this boy refuses to be bullied and he fights back. He latches onto the Alpha Monster's leg and sinks his teeth into the fantastical beast. The Others are stunned as the now victimized monster writhes in agony. One creature attempts to hold the young boy back to no avail.
Let's just say that this boy's nightmares won't be returning anytime soon.

Remember, please vote for this design at http://redbubble-monsters.strutta.com/entry/3767539
Thanks,
Mudge

Fraggle Rock 30 Year Anniversary Threadless Challenge

Threadless recently provided the opportunity to revisit the eighties when Fraggle Rock sposored a design contest to celebrate 30 years of Fraggle Rock. I grew up with the first airing of the Muppet Show, so it was an honor to be able to partricipate. Mudge Studios submitted 5 designs featuring a  variety of styles and concepts. If you see anything you like please support Mudge Studios with a nice score. The links are included with each entry below.
Scoring is open 'til May 21, 2013

Fraggle Rock 30th Anniversary Threadless Challenge Submission featuring Fraggle Rock 30 Year anniversary concept featuring Red Fraggle with 30 years pom poms cheering away as the other fraggles admire. A couple of doozers look on in the foreground.

Here we have a Doozer looking through the binoculars at Mount Fragglemore. Wembley, Gobo, Mokey and Boober are sculpted into the face of the mountain while Red Fraggle is featured on the 30th Anniversary signage.
Move over Mount Rushmore, Mount Fragglemore has taken your place as America's most recognized Rock.

After 30 years Gobo has truly found the way to rock out. That's right... Gobo Fraggle is plugged in!

Red Fraggle discovers the cutest thing in the whole universe... a radish that kinda looks like her. Red fraggle adoringly looks upon her discovery and says "you complete me".

Plain White Tees Challenge at Threadless

Worked hard last week to come up with three new designs for the Threadless Challenge spotlighting the awesome band known as the Plain White T's. The challenge required the design to feature either glow in the dark or uv inks or both. I went the route of the uv inks because I had never design for them. I also love the idea that part of the design doesn't reveal itself until the shirt is exposed to sunlight. I really enjoyed this challenge as I listened to a ton of Plain White Tees music which kept me inspired. If you have a chance, would you please take the time to score Mudge Studios designs over at Threadless

Plain White T's Challenge, a t-shirt design by MudgeStudios on Flickr.

Scoring is open 'til May 10, 2013.
This Plain White T's sub was inspired by their song the Giving Tree complete with the pocket knife that carved the heart into what was at one time the great giving tree. A stump remains as the singer/ songwriter wails away on his acoustic guitar. The choices were to either nurture love and build a home or build that sail boat, forsake love and sail away. Great song!

Hulk Challenge at Threadless

Hey all, just trying to figure out the best way to get my Threadless submissions out there. Looking into Tumblr, Flicker, Pinterest, etc. to see what drives the most traffic to Mudge Studios Threadless page. There are a very limited number of days available for open scoring- so I need to determine how to use my time wisely when promoting these subs. I believe that Voting is open until May 02, 2013. If you have a chance, Please vote and score some of my Hulk Tee shirt designs over at Threadless.
In this experiment, I've included all six Hulk subs, each with a caption and a link to the Threadless site where one can score the designs. Thanks for browsing!

Green Hulk and Red Hulk Arm Wrestling

Gray Hulk

Hulk as The Thinker

Green Hulk Not Happy Anymore
This is the revised version of the Incredibly Happy Hulk t-shirt design that I first submitted for the challenge. I made some major changes to the Hulk's facial expression. Let's just say... Hulk Not Happy Anymore.
Hulk Burden Earth
Hulk Burden Earth
For this Hulk challenge I've depicted Hulk as Atlas struggling under the tremendous weight of the Earth as the human race as a whole finally succumbs to temptation, of total selfishness, greed, corruption and violence towards one another. The fall of man is symbolized by a fiery rage that has completely over shadows even the notorious rage of Hulk. Hope you like it.

Hulk The Thinker - Threadless Challenge

Hulk Threadless Challenge by MudgeStudios
Hulk Threadless Challenge, a photo by MudgeStudios on Flickr.
Voting open until May 02, 2013. If you have a chance, Please vote and score some of my Hulk Tee shirt designs over at Threadless.
Featured above we have Hulk in the classic Thinker's pose struggling and saying it ain't easy being gray. Click the following link to score it http://thrdl.es/~/2a0c A pathetic frog looks up at the Hulk and sighs- yeah, try being Green. Of course, everybody knows that It Ain't Easy Being Green. Well, everybody except for the Incredible Hulk.
This sub was Inspired by Rodin's classic sculpture The Thinker. Featured is the gray skinned version of The Hulk as seen in the debut of the Incredible Hulk back in 1962. Originally Stan Lee wanted gray because it was a neutral skin color and did not point to a particular ethnicity. Green was finally chosen after seeing all of the inconsistencies with the gray skin tones in the first publication.

TMNT Challenge at Threadless Voting Closes on 4/23/2013

Please score some of my tee shirt designs over at Threadless by April 23,2013. Threadless had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle challenge, so I thought that I'd give it a shot by submitting 4 entries this week. The above TMNT tee features Raphael wielding his weapons of choice and utilizing them as Pizza Forks. The more votes and the higher the scoring means greater potential for having a design printed. The following link should take you to my designs page where you will see the designs below. Thanks in advance. Mudge

It's Pizza Time Close Up
Just had some fun with this one. There were a few hours remaining prior to the challenge deadline- so I sketched this one out fairly swiftly and added some color, etc. Here we have the gang climbing to the top of one Of New York Citys skyscrapers where there are preparing for their pizza feeding frenzy. Goal was to give the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a loose, whimsical stylization.
It's Always Pizza Time
Another Stylized submission featuring Michelangelo skateboarding in NYC while snarfing down a slice and a can of soda.

Pizza and TMNT Time!
My First TMNT Entry. This one was all about getting a simple idea out there and completing it it. Once I did that, the other submissions evolved more efficiently. Remember, if you have a chance- Please vote.
The more votes and the higher the scoring means greater potential for having a design printed. The following link should take you to my designs page. Thanks in advance.

Through the Years, ESPN has continued to expand its sports network by adding shows such as: SportsCenter, ESPN College Football, ESPN GameDay, ESPN College Basketball , ESPNU, SportsNation, Mike and Mike, Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, Baseball Tonight, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Fantasy Football. You named the sport and ESPN has it covered. Abraham Lincoln's B-Day is Feb. 12th!

Caricature of Abe Lincoln Stovepipe Hat at RedBubble
Caricature of Abraham Lincoln Stovepipe Hat at RedBubble
February is already here. Those of us that are Abraham Lincoln fans know what that means. That's right, it's his birthday! Abe was born on the 12th of the month during the year of 1809. Abraham Lincoln is a historically important person- especially in regard to the shaping of our country. Abraham Lincoln is widely regarded as one of country's Greatest Presidents that have ever lived.  When surveyed about who was the Greatest President, scholars  rank Abe in the top three along with George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

To this day, Abraham Lincoln also remains as one of the most recognizable of our U.S. Presidents. Many of us refer to him by his nickname- "Honest Abe. Abraham Lincoln did so much during his lifetime. It is a shame that Abe was assassinated shortly after having been elected to his second term. Abraham Lincoln had so much more that he wanted to do for his Great Country. America would go into mourning.

When many of us think of Abe, we often recall being a student in history class and learning of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, The Civil War, The Emancipation Proclamation and of course The Gettysburg Address. This is only a very short list- Check out Wikipedia for a beautifully laid out synopsis of Abraham Lincoln's Life. There are also countless books about our 16th President of the United States of America with some covering his life, accomplishments, vision, conspiracy and controversy. I'll have some links to some great Amazon books to your right.

Abraham Lincoln is not only a fascinating figure, but he is also very unique in his appearance.  I thought it would be fun to do some sepia tone sketches of Abe. I ended up creating a caricature portrait of Abraham Lincoln. An Abe caricature with and one without his iconic stovepipe hat. I also have the American Flag of his day serving as the backdrop.  I have have posted several Abe designs in my Mudge Studios Shops at CafePress, Zazzle, Skreened and RedBubble. You'll find a variety of Abraham Lincoln t-shirts, posters, stickers and other gift items for Abe Fans of all ages. One popular design is  What Would Abe Lincoln Do? by Mudge Studios. Actually, that is a really good question. What Would Lincoln do?  If Lincoln were around today, I'd bet that Abe would lead our country out of this quagmire and back to the Greatness. that this once proud country is accustomed to. I hope that you are an Abe Fan too.

Epoch Dinosaur Battle

A couple of years ago, we had lost power for a couple of days. It is amazing just how dependent that we have become on electricity to provide all of those creature comforts that we all seem to have taken for granted. We did however have a generator since we had to buy one during the great ice storm of 2009. We were with out power for over a week with that storm- while some in neighboring towns went without for two weeks.  At that time, we were thinking a new Ice Age was soon upon us.

Free Woolly Mammoth
Another Design inspired by the 2009 Ice Storm
Basically, we ran the generator for a couple of hours early in the morning and at 5:00 PM so that we could get the house up to temperature and prepare our meals.  I had no intention of running my Power Mac and our LCD TV on it. The weather was unseasonably warm with plentiful sunshine. I was comfortable with a heavy sweater and a blanket over my legs. As my computer wasn't available for use during the work day, I literally went back to the drawing board. Because I pretty much do everything digitally these days, It had been quite a few years since I had really devoted any serious time sketching and drawing on real paper using actual pencils and pens. I knew that this was going to be fun because I had no deadlines looming at this time.  I was inspired to just sketch, so I just put pencil to paper and started doodling. Of course, I just had to render some dinos, which were pretty much my favorite subject matter when I was a kid.
T Rex vs Triceratops
T Rex vs Triceratops Line Drawing
Last week I scanned those sketches from a couple years back and reworked them in Photoshop- making some edits and adding in the color. The dinosaur illustration above depicts a classic confrontation between Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. I imagined a scene having taken place at the dawn of the Cretaceous Period.  In this epic battle, the three horn impales sharp tooth. The T Rex is mortally wounded and the rogue Triceratops goes on to live another day.  After completing the art, I added the title 'Epoch' and posted the designs on a couple of Mudge Studios Pod shops. There, you'll see a variety of Dinosaur t-shirts, stickers, posters, refrigerator magnets and other novelties. I'll post some links to these dino items below.

CFTBL Fan!

CFTBL Fan Art on t-shirts and gifts
Once again, I've got to thank CafePress for the opportunity to create and produce licensed Universal Monsters art for use on t-shirts, posters, stickers, mugs and other assorted gift items. Their licensee program which includes some of my favorite movies and tv shows is really the only thing that keeps me producing and posting new Mudge Studios artwork on their POD site. Anyway, back to the image featured above which is an oval Creature From the Black Lagoon sticker. You can see that item as well as others designed specifically for a variety of other CFTBL novelties. You can check out Mudge's new CFTBL shop at CafePress Here. Oh, Be sure to shop directly at my shops, If you do plan to buy any of my Creature from the Black Lagoon designs as CafePress's direct market place usually charges much more.
Assorted CFTBL items at Mudge Studios CafePress Shop

As mentioned in a past post, The Creature from the Black Lagoon movies were some of my all time favorites when I was a kid. The Creature from the Black Lagoon was a Universal Studios Monster Movie released in 1954. The plot unreels when a fossilized skeletal hand with webbed digits is uncovered during an expedition deep in the Amazon. Dr. David Reed, a renowned ichthyologist from the marine biology institute finds a way to get back there to search for a complete specimen. The Creature from the Black Lagoon represents the missing link between land and marine animals- a valuable addition to the fossil record. Ultimately, the expedition finds its way into the Black Lagoon where they are confronted by a live specimen that hunts them down. The Gill-Man eventually kidnaps Kay the heroine of the story, and there is a standoff in The Creatures lair where the piscine amphibious humanoid is presumably shot to death. The Creature's body is never recovered.
There were three CFTBL flicks. The original '54 classic, the Revenge of the Creature and lastly- The Creature Walks Among Us. I remember the times when my mom would wake me up really late at night for the Creature Double Features that ran on Saturday Nights. She'd boil hot dogs and we'd enjoy all of those Universal Studio Monster Classics! Thought it would be interesting to mention that two actors played the part of the infamous amphibious Creature. Ben Chapman was the Creature on land while Ricou Browning did the underwater work. There has been talk over the years of remaking the movie and each time the project was scrapped due to various reasons. Rumor has it that Universal is currently making yet another attempt. We'll see...
Anyway, I really enjoyed creating the CFTBL fan art.  I hope that you like it too.

I Heart CFTBL Fan Design

Wedding Caricature for my Cousin Em

wedding caricature by Mudge Studios
Emily, Jantz and Becks Caricature 2012
2012 was a great year for the Mudgett family getting together with my Mom's side of the family as both of my cousins each had their wedding in Vermont last year- and they were only a couple of months or so apart. Cousin Nate's wedding was first and that was when Jantz, who is pictured above, requested that I create a caricature of he and Emily for their wedding that was coming up in early October. He wanted it to be a surprise for his bride to be- also requesting that he not even see any sketches. We chatted a little bit about style, etc. and then proceeded to enjoy the rest of night celebrating the union of Nate and Bree.

I couldn't do too much until many of the details concerning Emily and Jantz's wedding were locked in. During that time, I had Jantz scout around for some decent photo reference. Within a couple of weeks the details were rolling in. Emily was to be wearing a white dress while Jantz would be sporting a Carcoal colored tux with a peach tie and vest. He and his wedding party selected some really cool kicks. Check out the Vann's illustrated above... no pun intended. The newly weds had also booked their honeymoon at Turks and Caicos. Well, that was enough for me to get going on the project. I asked Jantz about throwing in the 'Together Forever October 6th 2012' and he loved the idea. That's when it occurred to him to ask me if there was anyway that I could have a matt or something around the caricature where their wedding guests could sign it. I told him that I was having their caricature printed on a canvas and that I could leave a generous area surrounding the caricatures for signing.
Mudge at the wedding adding his John Hancock to the canvas
When I had completed the art. I had emailed a high resolution file to CafePress where it was printed and shipped directly to my aunt in Vermont. She was able to keep it under wraps until the Big Day. The canvas was placed on an antique chair with some permanent gold and silver sharpies available nearby. All of their special wedding guests were able to sign it and leave a short message. Turns out that Jantz and my cousin Emily loved the artwork too. Their wedding caricature now hangs proudly in their apartment in California. I didn't tell Jantz that I was also including a caricature of their dog Becks. I'm sure that he loved that idea- well, except that the dog is wearing a New England Patriots jersey.  Emily absolutely loved that as she was born and raised in New England. Jantz, on the other hand, grew up in Cali and loves the Raiders. Anyway, I know how much both Em and Jantz love their pup and cherish Becks as the child in their family. I love those guys and I wish them all the best.
